Chapter 17

I woke up to the sound of pecking. Relentless. Like a woodpecker jammed to the nines with cocaine then plugged with jump start cables.

I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and sat up in bed, yawning loud enough to stop the crack head woodpecker in its tracks. The bird eyed me from a wooden beam on the ceiling on which it perched. It seemed disgruntled by my wakeful presence.

"You're the one who woke me up," I told it pointedly.

Was this even a woodpecker? It occurred to me that I didn't actually know what one looked like. Sure I'd heard of them, who hadn't? But did they all look like this fella here? It was pretty large. About the size of an adult macaw. Its feathers were as black as shadows. This was a bird that would be impossible to spot at night if it wasn't for the blazing orange mohawk on its head. A matching orange streak ran along the length of its beak, which was just about getting ready to attack the beam again.

"Wait, wait." I raised my hands. "Any chance you could hold off on the ruckus and let me get some more sleep first?"

The bird stared at me, bemused. We maintained eye contact while I assumed my options were being weighed out by the noisy punk rocker. The fate of my slumber lay in its hands. That was far too much power for one bird to possess. The woodpecker resumed drilling into the wood once more without a care in the world. Banging its head into the surface of the beam again and again like it was trying to knock itself out.

Groaning, I kicked off the cotton covers and stood up.

I banged my head against a low wall. "Fuck's sake."

Rubbing the tender spot, I approached my windowless window and looked out. Dawn was just starting to break in the distance. Way out there over the hills, I saw the sun beginning to rise. A warm glow stretching out towards the little cottages. Bringing an end to the night. I wondered what Sorine was up to. Was she an early riser? Something told me she wasn't. In fact, I'd bet she was the sort to sleep in until noon.

Fairgreen was a breathtaking slice of nature. The inn was perfectly positioned so guests could capture the stunning views of nature at its best. The morning air was crisp and fresh. Only thing missing was a hot cup of coffee. I wasn't a caffeine addict or anything, but there were certain moments that called for a steaming cup of roasted beans. Watching the shroud of night peel back over the village to be replaced by a new day was one such moment.

Last night, I'd taken up Iksar's offer and moved my meagre belongings from the cave back to the inn. To my new room. It was located on the third floor. The ground floor was the tavern, first two floors consisted of three guest rooms each and this third floor had another three rooms.
